Year 4&5 have been learning about different problems that are affecting our great oceans - plastic pollution, over-fishing, whaling, oil spills etc... This sparked a huge discussion about sharks and their value in the marine eco-system. The initial feeling was that sharks are dangerous and did not deserve to be protected in the same way as other marine life. After educating themselves and finding out lots of different facts about sharks, the class held a debate and gave reasons for their opinions about a range of statements. The conclusion was that sharks have as much value in our oceans as other marine life and that we should be actively seeking to take measures to protect our oceans in order to save all creatures and plants. To end the strong discussion, the class carried out a range of craft and drawing activities - what a thought-provoking day!
